Warning Lamps & Check Lamps

Brake Warning (A)

If the brake warning lamp is lit, there are two possible reasons for this: the parking brake may be applied or the brake fluid level may be too low. If the warning lamp is lit because your brake fluid level is too low then you must not continue driving; your car will need to be towed!

Oil Pressure (B)

If the oil pressure lamp lights up when you are driving, then you need to stop and turn off the engine immediately; otherwise there is a risk that your engine will seize up and be damaged. It may be sufficient to simply top up the engine oil, but if that doesn’t work, a garage will have to fix the problem.

Charging (C)

If this warning lamp lights up, it means that the battery is not charging sufficiently. This can be because the alternator belt is poorly tensioned or has come off. It could also be that there is a problem with the car’s alternator. To get the problem fixed, you can safely drive to the nearest garage.

Engine Temperature (A)

The engine temperature is shown in a gauge on the dashboard. If the temperature is too high or if the warning lamp lights up, you should stop the car and switch off the engine. If you drive with an overheated engine it can be seriously damaged. If you are unable to fix the problem on the spot, let the engine cool down and then drive to the nearest garage.

ABS (B)

This lamp will light up if there is something wrong with the car’s ABS system. There will then be a risk that the brakes could lock when braking strongly.

ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) (C)

If the lamp is flashing the anti-skid system is working. If the lamp is lit there is something wrong with the system or the system is disconnected.
