Give way signs let you know when you have a duty to give way or a duty to stop. A duty to give way means that you must give priority to other vehicles. There are eight different give way signs in total.

Duty to give way

Whenever you arrive at a junction where the duty to give way sign appears, you must give priority to any vehicles approaching on the intersecting road. Slow down in good time before the junction to show traffic on the intersecting road that you intend to give way.

Duty to stop

Whenever you see a stop sign, you must bring your vehicle to a complete stop before entering the junction. You also have a duty to give way and you must give priority to any traffic on the intersecting road. Stop signs may also appear at a level crossing, in which case you will need to bring your vehicle to a complete stop before crossing the level crossing.

Pedestrian crossings

At pedestrian crossings, you will come across either give way sign (A) or (B). At uncontrolled pedestrian crossings, you have a duty to give way to pedestrians who are on the crossing or just about to step out onto it. A pedestrian crossing is considered to be uncontrolled if there are no functioning traffic lights or no attending police officer at the pedestrian crossing.

Major roads

Major roads are marked by the major road sign (A). If you are going to cross a major road, you have a duty to give way to vehicles already driving on the major road. The road sign typically repeats after every junction. You will find the major road ends road sign (B) at the place where the major road comes to an end.

Oncoming traffic

This road sign (A) means that you have a duty to give way to oncoming traffic. This road sign appears at places where there is not enough space for two four-wheeled vehicles to pass each other. If there is oncoming traffic, you must slow down in good time to indicate that you have a duty to give way. In the case that two smaller vehicles meet (such as two mopeds, for example) and they are able to pass safely then the road sign shall not apply.

This road sign (B) indicates that oncoming traffic has a duty to give way to you.

Bicycle crossings are indicated by road sign (A). At bicycle crossings, you have a duty to give way to cyclists and class II mopeds which are already on or just about to enter the bicycle crossing.
