Revocation of Driving Licence
If you break the law or a traffic regulation, your driving licence may be revoked or blocked for a period of time. Your licence may be blocked for any amount of time from one month up to three years, depending on what you have done.
Probationary period
The probationary period lasts for two years. Rumours have been circulating that it has been raised to five years, but these are merely rumours. If your driving licence is revoked during the probationary period, you will have to undergo your driving education again. This means you will have to redo risk courses one and two and retake your theory and driving tests.
Examples of cases when the Swedish Transport Agency can revoke your licence:
- If you have been guilty of drunk driving, aggravated drunk driving or gross reckless driving.
- If you have fled the site of an accident you were involved in. This applies even if you have not caused the accident.
- If you have repeatedly breached traffic regulations; e.g. multiple cases of minor speeding offences.
- If you have breached an important traffic regulation; e.g. driven through a red light.
- If you have been repeatedly taken into custody by the police for intoxication. This does not need to be in connection with driving.
- If you have been guilty of a serious crime that is not necessarily related to driving; e.g. aggravated assault or a drug-related crime.
- If you have an illness which means you do not meet the medical requirements for having a driving licence.
In addition to having your licence revoked, you can also be fined or sentenced to prison, depending on the severity of the crime you have committed. If you have been convicted of drunk driving or aggravated drunk driving, you can apply to retain your driving licence under the condition that you use an alcolock, instead of having your licence revoked.
