Prohibitory signs indicate that something is prohibited. The prohibition will normally apply until the next junction unless other information is given. Certain prohibitory signs have an end sign, in which case the prohibition will apply to the end sign.
Prohibition within a zone
If a prohibitory sign is shown together with a zone sign (A) then the prohibition applies to the entire zone. In this situation, it is not permitted to park anywhere in the entire zone. This means that you cannot park anywhere in the entire zone except for designated parking spaces. The prohibition applies until after the area where the end sign for the zone (B) is found.
Speed limit
Speed limit signs are considered prohibitory signs because they indicate the speed you are prohibited from exceeding. A speed limit applies until the next sign indicating a different speed limit. Speed limit signs therefore do not need to be repeated after every junction.
Speed limits can also be indicated via electronic road signs. Electronic road signs are used to temporarily reduce the speed limit during hazardous conditions such as poor visibility or congestion. If there is a red circle around the speed limit (A), then you are obliged to comply with the limit displayed. If the sign only shows numbers without a red circle (B), then the road sign is only indicating a recommended speed limit and not a mandatory one. In such cases, you can exceed the limit shown however doing so is not recommended.
Examples of common prohibitory signs
No entry for vehicular traffic. This prohibition applies to all types of vehicles. You are not permitted to drive past the road sign from this direction, however vehicles coming from the other direction are allowed to pass this sign. This road sign may sometimes be curved so that it is easier to recognise from behind. It often appears at the end of one-way roads.
- No vehicles (A). Prohibition applies in both directions from the sign.
- No motor vehicles (B). No motor vehicles may pass this sign with the exception of class II mopeds.
- Restricted vehicle height (C). This road sign is used if the clear height is less than 4.5 metres.
- Restricted gross weight of vehicles (A)
- No left turn (B)
- No right turn (C)
- No overtaking (A). Applies only to four-wheeled vehicles. Overtaking two-wheeled mopeds or motorcycles is therefore permitted.
- No overtaking ends (B)
- No parking (C). Normally applies until the next junction and only on the side of the road where the sign is erected.
- No stopping or parking (A). This sign also normally applies until the next junction and only on the side of the road where it is erected.
- No studded tyres (B)
